Origin
Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.
Material
The silk of the pile of this Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Qom in pure silk into a real jewel and creates an atmosphere in the room that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be spun that are still tear-resistant despite their low weight. This fine yarn allows smaller knots to be tied and therefore more delicate patterns to be created. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk.In this pure silk Qom, even the foundation has been made from pure silk. Because the material of the weft and warp threads is so thin yet hard-wearing, a particularly fine knotting – and therefore a particularly fine pattern – is possible.
Condition
This Qom in pure silk has a story to tell. The edges are damaged in places. It was knotted around 56. We cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result – despite its age – it is in very good condition.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
