At approx. 490,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly painstaking, as you can see in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. Origin

Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.

Material

The silk in the pile of this Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern shine in ever-changing shades, depending on how the light falls. It turns this pure-silk Qom into a true jewel and brings an atmosphere to the room that is cosy and at the same time highly elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be made that are light in weight and still tear-resistant. This fine yarn allows smaller rug knots to be tied, and so finer patterns to be created. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk.

In this pure silk Qom, even the foundation has been made from pure silk. Because the material of the weft and warp threads is so thin yet hard-wearing, a particularly fine knotting – and therefore a particularly fine pattern – is possible.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Qom in pure silk. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1970. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partially restored, condition. We have not fully restored this Qom in pure silk, because we feel it has a particular presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly take the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
