Qom

This rug, with its multicoloured design, combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. A knot density of around 360,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 212 × 142 cm, it is well placed as a living room rug. It looks just as good beneath a dining table for four to six people. This one-of-a-kind piece brings individual character into the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.

Material

The pile of this Qom is knotted from what is known as kork wool. Kork wool – also written kurk – is a particularly fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. Kork wool is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner sides of the sheep's legs and is of especially high quality.

The weft and warp threads of this Qom are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Qom has a story to tell. It was knotted in around 1975. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, unrestored condition. The fringes could do with a repair. The pile has several bare patches. We have not restored this Qom because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we are of course happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Qom will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
