Origin

Goltogh (also Gholtogh, Goltog, Gholtog, Gholtug) rugs are knotted by settled Kurds. In quality and texture they are close to the Bijar. Their firm, hard handle comes – just as with the Bijar – from the special foundation weave. The cotton warp is stretched very tightly. The weft is beaten down extremely firmly. The knotting is done with the Turkish knot.

Goltogh rugs are usually held in dark colours. Almost always a slender hexagon dominates the central field, its points at the top and bottom sometimes broken up by floral ornament. The filling motifs – blossoms, leaves and occasionally animals – are strongly stylised.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Goltogh its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor or the architectural features. It settles beautifully into any setting and complements a room's furnishings in a subtle way.

The decorated surround (border) forms a wonderful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The repeating elements of this Goltogh have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming, yet never dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over designs.

The background of this Goltogh is cream white. Rust red also dominates the overall impression. The border is worked in black, rust red and light brown.

Material

The pile of this Goltogh was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels drops of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Goltogh are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially suitable for a hard-wearing foundation.
