Hamadan Angelas

There is only one rug like this in dusky pink and dark blue: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 120,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Its 168 × 107 cm make it a rug for the bedroom or study. It looks just as good in a child's room or a dressing room. Colour and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted near the city of Hamadan in north-western Iran. This Hamadan comes from the small village of Angelas. Hamadan lies in the middle of a well-watered fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh, at the foot of the Zagros foothills. Rug knotting has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name, because rugs from many of the places listed below come onto the market in Hamedan. What is typical of rugs from Hamadan is that they are knotted single-wefted. This means that one weft thread is inserted after every row of knots. Persian rugs are normally knotted with two or three wefts.

Material

The pile of this Hamadan Angelas was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Hamadan Angelas are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Hamadan Angelas. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted in around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
