Place of origin
Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted near the city of Hamadan in northwestern Iran. This Hamadan comes from the small village of Angelas. Hamadan is located in the middle of a well-irrigated fruit-growing area on the banks of the Qareh River at the foot of the Zagros Mountains. Rug making has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name for rugs, because in Hamedan rugs from many places are sold. A characteristic feature of Hamadan rugs is that they are knotted in one stitch. This means that a weft thread is inserted after each row of knots. Persian rugs are usually knotted using two or three wefts.
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Hamadan Angelas. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a beautiful contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Hamadan Angelas is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Hamadan Angelas is old rose. The border features old rose, gold and blue gray. The dark blue center combines the colors terracotta and light green.
This Hamadan Angelas has a story. It was hand knotted about 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
The pile of this Hamadan Angelas has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Hamadan Angelas are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
