Hamadan

There is only one rug like this one in dark blue and anthracite: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of around 160,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the fine working of the details. At 146 × 107 cm it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. It also cuts a fine figure in a child's room or a dressing room. Colouring and texture give a room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted in the area around the city of Hamadan in north-western Iran. Hamadan is one of the oldest cities in Persia and lies amid a well-watered fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh, at the foot of the Zagros foothills. Rug knotting has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name, for village and nomad rugs from many surrounding places come onto the market in Hamedan. What is typical of rugs from the Hamadan region is that they are knotted with a single weft using the Turkish knot. That is to say, one weft thread is inserted after every row of knots. Persian rugs are normally knotted with two or three wefts.

Material

The pile of this Hamadan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Hamadan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Hamadan. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. Parts of the border are missing on one side. It was knotted around 1990. We have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
