Origin and design
The name Herati derives from Herat, a city in northwestern Afghanistan. The Herati pattern is a very traditional repeating pattern used in hand-knotted carpets. This ancient pattern is composed of several individual elements. At the center of an inverted rhombus is a flower (a daisy, according to one common interpretation), entwined by four acanthus leaves. Stylized lotus blossoms adorn the top and bottom points, suggesting a connection to China. The side points terminate in peonies. This flower, also known as the common rose, is considered the queen of flowers in China and spread westward via the Silk Road.
All four sides of the pattern are flanked by crescent-shaped, lanceolate leaves, which are also interpreted as fish (Persian: "mahi"). This is the origin of the Persian name Mahi-to-hos, meaning "fish in the pond."
Notes on our photos:
The colors of this rug change depending on which side it is viewed from. It depends on whether the light falls on the line or against the line of the pile. We have therefore taken pictures of this rug from different perspectives.
