Kayseri in pure silk

This one-of-a-kind piece in light blue and rust red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of around 350,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 148 × 101 cm it is well placed as a bedside rug. It also cuts a fine figure in a reading corner. The harmonious colouring and the distinctive texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. Origin

Kayseri (Latin Caesarea, named in honour of the Roman emperor Tiberius) is the capital of the province of the same name, Kayseri, in Cappadocia in Turkey. Kayseri rugs (also Kaiseri rugs) are usually made of pure silk. They are highly valuable and decorative. Kayseri rugs are typically knotted in smaller sizes and used as wall hangings or prayer rugs.

Material

The silk of the pile of this Kayseri in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Kayseri in pure silk into a real highlight and creates an atmosphere in the room that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be produced that are still tear-resistant despite their low weight. Fine yarn allows smaller knots to be tied and therefore finer patterns to be created. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk.

With this Kayseri in pure silk, even the foundation is made of pure silk. Thanks to the thin yet hard-wearing material of the weft and warp threads, a particularly fine knotting and therefore a particularly fine pattern is possible.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Kayseri in pure silk. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. In places the pile of this piece is more heavily worn. There is also minimal discolouration around the medallion. It was knotted around 1990. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
