Kayseri in pure silk

This one-of-a-kind piece in dark red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 420,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 174 × 116 cm, it works beautifully as a small living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Kayseri (Latin Caesarea, named in honour of the Roman emperor Tiberius) is the capital of the province of the same name, Kayseri, in Cappadocia in Turkey. Kayseri rugs (also Kaiseri rugs) are usually made of pure silk. They are highly valuable and decorative. Kayseri rugs are typically knotted in smaller sizes and used as wall hangings or prayer rugs.

Material

The pile of this Kayseri in pure silk is made of mercerised cotton. Cotton consists of lustrous fibres filled with cell sap. When the cell sap dries after harvesting, the surface of the fibre buckles and, because light is now refracted differently, loses its sheen. In the middle of the 19th century, John Mercer invented the process named after him, mercerisation (also spelled mercerization). During mercerisation the cotton is held under tension in cold, concentrated caustic soda, where it takes on a new, higher-quality fibre structure. Mercerised cotton has shortened fibres with a round cross-section. The treated fabric no longer shrinks and holds its shape very well. The changed refraction of light gives the fibre a silky sheen. Mercerised cotton also takes dye more readily and is considerably more tear-resistant than untreated cotton. Because mercerisation is elaborate and costly, only high-quality cotton fibres are refined in this way. Thanks to the silky sheen of the yarn, mercerised cotton – like viscose – is often called "artificial silk". That colloquial term "artificial silk" is not permitted, however, under German textile labelling law (Textilkennzeichnungsgesetz, TKG).

The weft and warp threads of this Kayseri in pure silk are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Kayseri in pure silk has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 126. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The fringes could do with a repair here and there. The pile has become a little thinner in places over the years. There are also a few stains. We have not fully restored this Kayseri in pure silk because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
