Kazak

This rug in cream white exists just this once in exactly this form: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 160k-200k knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 173 × 123 cm it works beautifully as a rug for the bedroom or study. It is just as effective in a seating area. Colouring and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
