Kazak

This rug in light grey combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 160k-200k knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 194 × 150 cm make it a small living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
