Kazak

This one-of-a-kind piece in light blue and beige unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. The knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 201 × 198 cm it is well placed as a round rug for the dining room. It is just as effective in a conservatory. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Kazak are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and has some give, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
