Kazak

This one-of-a-kind piece in rust red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 120 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 216 × 128 cm it works beautifully as a small living-room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Kazak is new wool.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Kazak. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted in around 126. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has worn thin over large areas and shows around 10 smaller holes. The edges and fringes also need repair in places. On close inspection you will also see that a small piece of the border is missing, although this does nothing to affect the rug's durability. We have not restored this Kazak because we feel it has a particular charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Kazak will give you pleasure for decades to come.
