Kazak

There is only one rug in light grey quite like this one: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 160k-200k knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 240 × 168 cm it is well placed as a living-room rug. It also looks the part beneath a dining table for four to six people. Colouring and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
