Origin and design

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) carpets belong to the group of Caucasian carpets. Carpets have been produced in the Caucasus since the late 18th century. They are characterized by abstract geometric tribal patterns in primary colors. Typically, the geometric, and less frequently floral, motifs are depicted in contrasting, intense colors. In the 19th century, a considerable portion of these carpets, predominantly produced in villages under Russian control, were exported to the West.
