Kazak

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in gold. At roughly 160k-200k knots per m² the work involved is considerable, and you can see it in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 356 × 251 cm make it a large living-room rug. It shows just as well in the dining room beneath a table for six to eight people. Colouring and texture give any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for years.

Origin

Kazak (also spelled Kasak) rugs belong to the group of Caucasian rugs. Rugs have been made in the Caucasus since the end of the 18th century. Characteristic are the abstract, geometric tribal patterns in primary colours. Typically the geometric – and more rarely floral – motifs are rendered in intense, high-contrast colours. In the 19th century, a considerable share of these rugs, produced mainly in villages, was exported to the West under Russian control.

Material

The pile of this Kazak was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
