Origin

Kelims (also kilim, qilim) were traditionally made only for the weavers' own use. Nomads and farmers used, and still use, their flat-woven kelims as rugs on the floor, but also as tent or wall hangings, blankets, cushions or bags. With our new kelims we have developed the traditional Iranian weaving technique further, so that we can make kelims that are considerably firmer and thicker. We call this new generation of kelims Kelim Hoch2.

For our Kelim Hoch2 we wrap new wool dyed with natural colours around thick strands of coarsely spun new wool, creating firm panels with an extraordinary texture. We then sew these panels, in different colours and patterns, together with coarse stitches until we reach the width we want. The result is contemporary, extremely hard-wearing kelims with simple patterns and harmonious shades.

Material

The pile of this Kelim Hoch2 was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.
