Origin
Kelims (also kilim, qilim) were traditionally made only for the weavers' own use. Nomads and farmers used, and still use, their flat-woven kelims as rugs on the floor, but also as tent or wall hangings, blankets, cushions or bags.
With our new kelims we have developed the traditional Iranian weaving technique further, so that we can make kelims that are considerably firmer and thicker. We call this new generation of kelims Kelim Hoch2.
For our Kelim Hoch2 we wrap new wool dyed with natural colours around thick strands of coarsely spun new wool, creating firm panels with an extraordinary texture. We then sew these panels, in different colours and patterns, together with coarse stitches until we reach the width we want. The result is contemporary, extremely hard-wearing kelims with simple patterns and harmonious shades.
Pattern
The straight stripes of this Kelim Hoch2 bring order and structure to the pattern.
The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Kelim Hoch2 its quiet elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and doesn't steal attention from the furniture, the décor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The surface of this Kelim Hoch2 has a mottled look. The shifts in colour tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug forgiving when it comes to dirt. These so-called colour shifts, or abrash, give the rug a livelier appearance. The mottling occurs because the wool of this Kelim Hoch2 was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural dyes are absorbed to varying degrees.
The ground of this Kelim Hoch2 is terracotta.
Material
The pile of this Kelim Hoch2 was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
