Origin
Kelims are loved all over the world. For their luminous colours and simple, geometric patterns.
Kelims, also known as Kilim or Qilim, were originally made for the weavers' own needs. Nomads and farmers used these versatile rugs not only as floor coverings, but also as tent or wall hangings, blankets, cushions or bags. Because Kelims were a firm part of daily life, their patterns always carry personal messages and meanings with a special symbolism for the weavers and their families. The seemingly simple designs are often deeply rooted in tradition and culture.
In Europe it is above all Kelims from Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan and the Turkmen region that enjoy great popularity. Yet hand-woven rugs like these are found in almost every region where knotted rugs are part of the tradition as well. Their timeless look and cultural depth keep Kelims treasured home pieces to this day.
Material
The pile of this exceptional Kelim was hand-knotted from very high-quality new wool. Our new wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
