Origin

Mazandaran is one of Iran's most remote mountain regions. It lies in the north of the country and is shaped by a landscape that is untypically subtropical for Iran, stretching between the sandy beaches of the Caspian Sea and the snow-capped peaks of the Alborz mountains. For a long time it was assumed that Mazandaran was out of the question as a source of collectable textiles. All the greater was the surprise when, in the mid-1990s, the textile heritage of simple farmers living from crops and livestock was rediscovered in village chests and cupboards in Hezar-Jerib, a remote, poor and almost forgotten mountain area in the far east of Mazandaran.

The Kelims from Mazandaran are regarded as an archetype of minimal design. Because of their very local history, these Kelims only became widely known among specialists in the past decade. Thanks to their simple, understated patterns, which still feel contemporary, and their harmonious, earthy tones, their following keeps growing.

Material

The pile of this Mazandaran Kelim was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural grease content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.
