This rug in wine red exists in this form only once: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. The knot density of around 300,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 342 × 267 cm it is well placed as a rug for generous living spaces. It is just as effective beneath a large dining table. Colours and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

The city of Kerman (also Kirman) lies in the south-east of Persia at around 2,000 metres above sea level. Kerman sits on the old caravan routes and looks back on centuries of tradition in both craft and trade. Kerman is mentioned in Marco Polo's travel account Il Milione. Rugs from Kerman are marked by fine patterns, flowing lines and soft gradations of colour. The classic patterns of the 19th century are often figurative. Hunting scenes and animals were depicted, as were mythological figures and historical personalities. The broad palette of Kerman rugs is enriched above all by its many shades of red, traditionally obtained from the cochineal insect.

Material

The pile of this Kerman was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural grease content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally proofed against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a balancing effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Kerman are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and has some give, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Kerman. It had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with great care. As a result it is in very good condition – despite its age.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
