Origin

Kordi (also Kord or Kurdi) is a collective term for rugs from Iran that are hand-knotted by Kurds. Koliai and Khorasan rugs are therefore, if you like, Kordi rugs too. As a rule, Kurdi rugs come from the Khorasan province. Less often they also come from the Turkmen-Afghan region.

In their rug knotting, the Kurds draw on every one of the classic provenances (source, origin). They don't copy the traditional patterns slavishly, though, but reinterpret them in their own distinctive way. The colouring in particular often departs considerably from the original patterns. That's why you'll find the most varied designs among Kordi rugs, though usually in a rather dark palette.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition gives this Kordi its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The surface of this Kordi has a mottled look. The changes in hue and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn run across the length of the rug, making the colours shimmer and the rug forgiving of dirt. These so-called colour shifts, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier character. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Kordi was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural dyes are taken up unevenly.

At the heart of this Kordi's central field lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, giving the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

Condition

This Kordi has had admirers before you. The edges & fringes could do with a repair in places. It was hand-knotted around 1930. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. So despite its age, it is in very good condition.

Material

The pile of this Kordi was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, has a balancing effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Kordi is made of new wool.
