This one-of-a-kind piece in dark brown and dark blue unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the fine rendering of the details. At 195 × 136 cm it is well suited as a rug for the bedroom or study. It comes into its own just as nicely in a children's room or a dressing room. The harmonious colouring and the distinctive texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. Origin

Malayer is the second-largest city in the province of Hamadan in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The city of Malayer as it stands today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.

Material

The pile of this Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Malayer are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and supple, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Malayer has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1930. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good but only partly restored condition. The edges are damaged in places. The fringes could do with a repair. Parts of the border are missing on one side. The pile is evenly worn. We have not fully restored this Malayer because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course happily carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
