Origin

Malayer is the second-largest city in Hamadan province in western Iran and is known for its rug-knotting workshops. Malayer lies between Hamadan and Khorramabad, 380 km south-west of Tehran. The town as we know it today was founded in 1808 under the name Daulatabad, in order to bring the restless region along the Zagros mountains under the control of the Persian state.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Malayer its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural features. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The edge of the rug is graced by a surround (border). The border forms a wonderful contrast to the centre.

The background of this Malayer is dark blue. The overall impression is also dominated by dark brown and dark blue. The border is worked in dark brown and beige. Dark brown and dark blue are combined at the centre.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Malayer. It had owners before you who valued it and used it. It was hand-knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partially restored condition. The edges are damaged in places. The fringes could do with a repair. On one side, parts of the border are missing. The pile is evenly worn. We have not fully restored this Malayer, because we think it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we are of course happy to carry on restoring it for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Malayer was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Malayer are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation.
