Origin

This rug is one of the few machine-made rugs in our collection. Knotting and weaving rugs is an elaborate, time-consuming process. Making rugs by hand calls for a great deal of skill, time and care. Only in the 19th century, in the wake of the industrial revolution, did rug making gradually become mechanised. Wool could now be spun with motorised machines, and automated weaving and knotting looms made it possible to produce rugs quickly and cheaply.

Today's automated rug knotting and weaving looms work with a multitude of yarns that are unwound from spools and fed in. The desired pattern is set digitally beforehand. In this way rugs can be made by machine in next to no time. By hand, the work can take weeks, months or even years – depending on material, fineness and size. This naturally has a considerable effect on the price.

 

Pattern

The decorated surround (border) forms a wonderful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

At the middle of the central field of this Maschiny lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.

The background of this Maschiny is light red. The border is worked in blue-grey, black and beige. In the beige centre, blue-grey and black are combined.

 

Condition

This Maschiny has had admirers before you. It was machine-made around 2000. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The edges are damaged in places. The fringes could do with a repair. We haven't restored this Maschiny because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you'd like us to, we'll of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Maschiny will bring you pleasure for decades to come.

 

Material

The pile of this Maschiny was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Maschiny are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
