Origin

This rug is one of the few machine-made rugs in our collection. Knotting and weaving rugs is an elaborate, time-consuming process. Making rugs by hand calls for a great deal of skill, time and care. Only in the 19th century, in the wake of the industrial revolution, did rug making gradually become mechanised. Wool could now be spun with motorised machines, and automated weaving and knotting looms made it possible to produce rugs quickly and cheaply.

Automated knotting and weaving looms today work with a great many yarns that are unwound from spools and fed into the machine. The desired pattern is set digitally beforehand. In this way, rugs can be produced by machine in next to no time. By hand, the work can take weeks, months or even years, depending on material, fineness and size. This naturally has a considerable effect on the price. Alongside wool, this piece is also made with a refined precious-metal yarn.

 

Pattern

The lavish floral motifs of this Maschiny are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

A lightly suggested border frames the edge of this rug.

The colour of this Maschiny is rust red.

 

Condition

This Maschiny has had admirers before you. It was made by machine around 1970. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. We did not restore this Maschiny completely, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

 

Material

The pile of this Maschiny was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft threads of this Maschiny are made of wool. Cotton was used for the warp threads.
