Origin
Mehreban is a small village in north-western Iran, not far from the city of Tabriz. Rugs from the region around Mehraban are usually wonderfully colourful, and the wool, with its high lanolin content, is of excellent quality. The patterns of Mehraban rugs are as a rule inspired by nature and show stylised flower or leaf motifs.
Pattern
The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Mehraban its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the decor or the architectural details. It settles beautifully into any setting and complements a room's furnishings in a subtle way.
The edge of the rug is framed by a decorative border. The border forms a beautiful contrast with the centre.
The repeating elements of this Mehraban rug have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming without ever becoming dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.
The surface of this Mehraban has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and help the rug hide dirt. These so-called colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier feel. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Mehraban was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural pigments are absorbed to differing degrees.
The background of this Mehraban is rust red. The border is worked in dusky pink, olive green and blue-grey.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this Mehraban. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was hand-knotted around 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has become a little thinner over the years and has developed holes in two places. The border is also missing in a few spots along one side. The edges and fringes of the rug are damaged in parts and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Mehraban because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course happily restore the rug for you. Either way, this Mehraban will bring you pleasure for decades to come.
Material
The pile of this Mehraban was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Mehraban are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
