Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

Material

The pile of this Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Meschad. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 46. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The pile is worn in places. The edges are damaged in parts. The fringes could do with a repair. We have not fully restored this Meschad, because we feel it has a special character just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course carry the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
