Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

Material

The pile of this Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Meschad has a story to tell. It was knotted around 66 and has given faithful service ever since. The pile has thinned a little over the years and there is a hole roughly 20 cm across. The edges and fringes of the rug are damaged in places and could do with a repair. All in all it is still in good condition and has decades of pleasure left in it. We have not restored this Meschad, because we feel it has a special presence exactly as it is. If you would rather have it restored, we are of course happy to do that for you.
