Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

Pattern

The ornate border forms a wonderful contrast with the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

In the middle of the central field of this Meschad lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, creating the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The background of this Meschad is dark red. The border is kept in dark blue. At the centre, light blue and light red are combined.

Condition

This Meschad has a story to tell. It was hand-knotted around 1995. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The edges are damaged in places. We haven't fully restored this Meschad because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that's what you'd like, we'll gladly carry on restoring the rug for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels drops of water and is naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
