Meschad
Every rug is a one-of-a-kind piece – this example of the Meschad type comes from Persia. At 445 × 337 cm it works as a large living room rug for generous living and dining areas. Pure wool, worked by hand – hard-wearing and existing in this form only once. Its knot density is 160,000.

Origin
In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.
Material
The pile of this Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound. The weft and warp threads of this Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
Condition
This Meschad has a history. It was knotted around 96. It has been cleaned thoroughly and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The pile is worn in places. Some of the edges are damaged. The fringes could do with a repair. We have not fully restored this Meschad because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course gladly restore the rug further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a nearly perfect condition.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
