Origin and design

Nain is one of Iran's most renowned carpet-producing regions. The city of Nain lies northwest of Isfahan and boasts a long weaving tradition. Before the Khajar dynasty (1794-1925), the highest quality robes for noblemen—known as abas—were produced here. Under the influence of Western culture, the traditional robe was replaced by the suit. The weavers shifted their focus and began weaving carpets.

Nain carpets owe their distinctive patterns and color combinations primarily to the master weaver Hadj Fatollah Habibian Naiini. He limited his weaving to fewer than ten colors, thus laying the foundation for the color composition of the still highly sought-after Nain carpets. The basic colors remain predominantly white or beige and blue, although red, green, and yellow Nain carpets are becoming increasingly common. Floral patterns, often accentuated with silk, are typical. With their understated elegance and limited color palette, Nain carpets fit perfectly into modern interiors. Nain carpets are classified into four quality grades, indicated by Lah (the Persian word for layer). Lah describes the number of threads used to create the warp. The more threads used, the thicker the warp and therefore the knots, and the lower the knot density.
