Softly framed Neo Nain, grey-beige with compartment pattern

Origin

Contemporary aesthetics meet Oriental tradition – for this Neo Nain rug we took our inspiration from the traditional pattern of Persian Nain rugs.

Nain is one of Iran's best-known rug provenances (source, origin). The town of Nain lies north-west of Isfahan and has a knotting tradition going back centuries. The pattern of Nain rugs with its floral tendrils is unmistakable and, in a sense, an archetype of the classic Persian rug.

We have reworked the traditional pattern templates and, above all, arranged the colouring completely anew. The result is a fusion of traditional Oriental rug design and modern European aesthetics. With our Neo Nain rugs we set out to meet the trends of European interior design, playing freely with the conventions of traditional rug knotting.

Pattern

The compartment pattern of this Neo Nain calls to mind a lushly planted garden with geometrically arranged beds, each one neatly framed. This layout is so characteristic that rugs with a compartment pattern are also known as garden rugs. The individual compartments in this Neo Nain's pattern show different motifs, yet follow a strictly symmetrical, rectangular arrangement.

There is a reason for this: large parts of Persia and many other regions of the Middle and Near East are desert- or steppe-like arid areas, where so-called irrigation horticulture is widely practised. Water is channelled to the beds through small irrigation canals. The panel pattern renders this irrigation system in heavily simplified form. Because of the dryness in these regions, blooming and verdant gardens are also something quite special. The panel pattern therefore probably goes back to the wish to bring a little garden – and with it a small paradise – into the home. In the Koran the term garden, as the earthly counterpart to paradise – a word of Old Persian origin, incidentally – appears very frequently.

Material

The pile of this Neo Nain is made of a hard-wearing blend of wool and viscose. Viscose – also called viscose rayon, acetate silk or rayon – is always obtained from cellulose, a natural product, and thus from the raw material wood. In India the cellulose pulp is obtained from bamboo. In an elaborate process the pulpy cellulose is drawn into one continuous textile yarn. This is why viscose is also referred to as a continuous filament yarn. Because of the silky sheen of the yarn, viscose obtained from bamboo is also called "Bamboo Silk", bamboo silk. The colloquial term "artificial silk" is not permitted under the German Textile Labelling Act (TKG). The weft and warp threads of this Neo Nain are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic and therefore particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
