Origin

Modern hand-knotted Oushak rugs are a beautiful combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Oushak rugs have been made in Turkey for centuries and are known for their characteristic colours and mostly large, floral patterns. We have reinterpreted the traditional Oushak rug to suit contemporary interiors. Bright, bold colours and partly abstract patterns give Oushak rugs a contemporary, refreshing aesthetic. Special dyeing and washing techniques give our Oushak rugs their distinctive vintage look.

Our Oushak rugs are particularly at home in living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas and offices. With their blend of traditional craftsmanship and generous floral, modern design, they are a timeless classic that will give you pleasure for many years.

Pattern

The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.

The lush floral motifs of this Oushak are elegantly drawn and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The surface of this Oushak has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug from showing everyday soiling. These so-called colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier character. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Oushak was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural pigments are absorbed to differing degrees.

The background of this Oushak is pink. In the overall impression the rug glows in many colours. The border is worked in light blue and a mix of colours.

Material

The technique used to prepare the materials for the pile of this Oushak is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, it even takes two kilograms of dyer's weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive too. And fewer and fewer people still master spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyed with natural colours, the high-quality wool keeps its natural lanolin content. Wool that is naturally dyed and hand-spun creates fascinating, shifting patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, unfolds as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style. The weft and warp threads of this Oushak are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially suitable for a hard-wearing foundation.
