Origin

Lori rugs are a finer version of the Gabbeh, which was traditionally knotted by the Lurs. The Lurs are a tribe in south-western Persia (also called Loristan). Lori (also Luri) rugs are likewise known as Loribaft. The added syllable "baft" means roughly "knotted". Translated, Loribaft therefore means Lur knotting. Lori rugs traditionally have imaginative geometric patterns in cheerful colours. Modern Lori are usually plainer today, with monochrome designs. Even so, you will still come across traditional, stylised and geometricised motifs from nomadic daily life, such as goats, camels, dogs, plants or people. The geometric pattern and the friendly colours create a pleasant, warm atmosphere at home.

 

Pattern

The surface of this Lori has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug forgiving of dirt. These so-called colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier character. The mottling comes about because the wool for this Lori was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural dyes are taken up to varying degrees. The colours of this Lori form a gradient and flow into one another. The background of this Lori is grey-beige. The overall impression is also dominated by beige and grey.

 

Material

This PETra was hand-woven in the traditional Kelim style, which means it has no thick, upright pile fibres. The rug is made up purely of warp and weft threads, so it carries the same pattern on both sides and can be used either way up.

What makes the material of this rug especially innovative: it is made from recycled PET bottles. In a special process, PET bottles are shredded and turned into yarn. Rugs made from recycled PET offer many advantages that traditional cotton or wool rugs don't: they are extremely long-lasting, resistant to moisture and can even be used outdoors.

The soft feel of the PETra is reminiscent of the texture of a traditional wool Kelim. The difference from rugs made of cotton or wool is barely noticeable.

Any ripples you might spot in some of the photos will disappear within a few days. We could hardly wait to photograph the rugs, so we took the shots the moment they arrived.
