Origin

When designing this hand-woven rug, simplicity and a focus on the essentials mattered most to us. The result is a modern, clean-lined design that works beautifully in contemporary interiors. For all its cool, pared-back look, this rug makes any room feel warmer and more welcoming.

Pattern

The surface of this PETra has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug forgiving of dirt. These so-called colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier character. The mottling comes about because the wool for this PETra was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural dyes are taken up to varying degrees.

The pile is kept in a single colour, terracotta. The plain design is restrained, yet it can also set a wonderful accent in a room. The monochrome look of this rug fits in beautifully wherever you put it.

Material

This PETra was hand-woven like a Kelim and therefore consists only of warp and weft threads. So it has no thick, upright pile. Like all Kelims, this PETra carries the same pattern on both sides and can be used either way up.

What makes this PETra special is the material it was hand-woven from. An innovative process turns PET bottles into yarn for rugs. The bottles or packaging are shredded and the flakes are then melted down into a yarn.
Rugs made from recycled PET bottles have a few qualities that cotton and wool rugs don't: they are very hard-wearing, unaffected by moisture and can even be used outdoors.
This rug feels surprisingly soft, much like a Kelim made of wool. You can barely tell any difference from other woven rugs in wool or cotton.

The ripples you may notice in some of the photos settle within a few days. We were far too impatient once the rugs finally arrived and couldn't wait any longer to photograph them.
