Rudbar

This one-of-a-kind piece in dark red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 540,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 123 × 86 cm, it works beautifully as a small living room rug. The harmonious colouring and the characteristic texture lend any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

The small town of Rudbar lies in north-western Iran. It became famous for its embroidery. Rugs are made in Rudbar in relatively small quantities. This little town produces fine knotted work in the style of the Herat pattern, either as an all-over design or as a field pattern dominated by a hexagon, with the rest of the field decorated in Herati motifs. Great craftsmanship usually shows in the pale floral border with its artful, delicate drawing.

Material

The pile of this Rudbar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Rudbar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Rudbar. It has had owners before you who valued it and put it to use. It was knotted around 41 and has given faithful service ever since. The pile is worn in places. The rug has a hole 10 cm in diameter. The edges are damaged in parts. The rug has a few smaller stains. All in all, it is still in good condition and can give pleasure for decades to come. We have not restored this Rudbar, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you.
