Origin and design

This carpet originates from Sarough (also spelled Sarouk, Saruk, or Sarogh). Sarough is one of the most renowned carpet-weaving regions in Iran. Located in the western Persian province of Aarak, it encompasses the provinces of Arak, Djozan, Ghiasabad, Mahal, Malayer, Mohajeran, Sultanabad, and Wiss. In Sarough, Persian patterns of all kinds are woven, sometimes even according to customer specifications. The neighboring Farahan patterns, as well as the unique Sultanabad designs and the paisley-inspired Mir-i-Boteh pattern, are particularly popular. Typical of this type of carpet is the very high quality of the wool pile, as the virgin wool comes from the Persian highlands. The backing – warp and weft – is usually made of cotton. Old and antique carpets often feature a blue weft thread. The knotting is very fine, and the pile is relatively high.
