Scandi

This rug in beige/grey combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At approx. 90,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 348 × 348 cm make it a large living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character to the room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Demand for mid-century pieces, and above all for Scandinavian-style vintage rugs, has risen sharply. The move towards modern décors in the middle of the last century produced wonderful designs, artworks and patterns, particularly in Scandinavia, that sit beautifully in contemporary interiors. Our Scandi rugs take up the designs of that era and bridge the gap between a boho- and ethno-inspired look and the clarity of an Art Deco interior. The designs feel modern and yet somehow nostalgic.

Material

The technique used to prepare the materials for the pile of this Scandi is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dye per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, it even takes two kilos of weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time-consuming and labour-intensive as well. On top of that, fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.

The weft and warp threads of this Scandi are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.
