Origin
The city of Senneh is known today as Sanandaj and is the heart of the western Persian province of Kurdistan. In Iran, Sanandaj is famous – besides its rugs – for its backgammon sets handcrafted from the root wood of walnut trees. Today, Senneh rugs are sometimes also called Sanandaj rugs. Classic Senneh rugs have only a single weft thread, which makes them easy to identify from the back. The finer the knotting, the flatter the pile is sheared.
Pattern
The edge of the rug is framed by a decorative border. The border forms a beautiful contrast with the centre.
The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Senneh its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor or the architectural features. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
At the middle of this Senneh's central field lies the symmetrical centrepiece, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, creating the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Senneh is beige. The overall impression is dominated by light red and beige as well. The border is worked in light red, dark blue and olive green. In the beige centre, dark blue and light red are combined.
Condition
You aren't the first to take a liking to this Senneh. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was hand-knotted around 1985. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. We haven't restored this Senneh because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that's what you'd like, we'll of course be happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Senneh will bring you joy for decades to come.
Material
The pile of this Senneh is made of cotton. The cotton plant is grown in most rug-producing countries and is therefore very popular for rug making. The weft threads of this Senneh are wool. Cotton was used for the warp threads.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
