Geometric Sirjan runner, beige with border

Origin

The town of Sirjan lies in the west of Kerman province. The Afshar tribes settled there knot their rugs mostly as home work, in Sirjan itself and in the surrounding villages. That is why a Sirjan is often also called an Afshar. One of the hallmarks of Sirjan rugs is the so-called Sehkaleh pattern. The medallion has three heads on each side. In Persian, "seh" means three and "kaleh" means head. Typical colours are a light red and a warm dark blue. The rugs are knotted with the Persian knot. Warp and weft threads are made of cotton, with the weft laid double.

Pattern

The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Sirjan its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The repeating elements of this Sirjan rug have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming, yet never dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.

The background of this Sirjan is beige. The border is worked in dark blue and dark brown.

Material

The pile of this Sirjan was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Sirjan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
