Origin

In Persian (Farsi), Sofreh simply means cloth. Sofreh were traditionally made in a range of sizes for different tasks around the house. The Ardi Sofreh or bread-dough Sofreh (Ardi means flour in Farsi) are usually rather small and square and were made for storing bread. The somewhat larger squares, from around 150 cm x 150 cm upwards, are called Roukorsi or Sofreh Roukorsi, which translates roughly as "cloth over the stove". Longer, narrower Sofreh served as tablecloths.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition gives this Sofreh its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the decor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

In the pattern of this Sofreh it is above all the diamonds that catch the eye. A diamond is a rhombus standing on one of its points, and in an Oriental rug its four equal sides can be serrated, stepped or set with hooks. The diamond is one of the oldest basic forms in the Oriental rug. In the Islamic world it carries a symbolic meaning: it stands for the immortality of the soul. That is why it is found so often as a filler motif.

The background of this Sofreh is dark blue. Light brown and dark blue also dominate the overall impression. The border is worked in light brown and dark blue.

Material

This Sofreh was made by hand from wool.
