Tabriz

This rug in dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 640,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the design and the finely worked details. Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk wool – is a particularly fine-stranded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner sides of the sheep's legs and is of especially high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Tabriz has had admirers before you. The ends of the rug show slight moth damage in places. There is also one smaller stain to report. It was knotted around 31. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
