A knot density of approx. 500,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 210 × 151 cm it is well placed as a living-room rug. Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk wool – is a particularly fine-stranded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner sides of the sheep's legs and is of especially high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls.

In this Tabriz even the foundation is made of pure silk. Because the weft and warp threads are of a thin yet hard-wearing material, an especially fine knotting – and with it an especially fine pattern – becomes possible.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
