This one-of-a-kind piece in rust red and dark red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At around 360,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly intricate, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 236 × 85 cm make it a hallway runner. It looks just as good beside the bed. The harmonious colours and the characteristic texture give any room an exclusive, homely atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a piece of furnishing – it is a piece of traditional textile art with individual character and lasting value.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Tabriz has a history. The fringes could do with a repair. It was knotted around 1980. We have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
