Tabriz

This rug in light blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 640,000 knots per m², the work behind it is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 310 × 245 cm make it a living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into the room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls.

In this Tabriz even the foundation is made of pure silk. Because the weft and warp threads are of a thin yet hard-wearing material, an especially fine knotting – and with it an especially fine pattern – becomes possible.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tabriz. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 16. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.
