Origin

The city of Tabriz (also written Täbriz or Täbris) on the northern edge of Persia has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups, thanks to its position at the crossroads of numerous caravan routes. Although the city lies in East Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz traded, and still trade, in craftwork and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages. Signature: "Iran Tabriz"

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Tabriz its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not draw attention away from the furniture, the decor or the architectural details. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.

In the middle of the central field of this Tabriz lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.

A special highlight of this Tabriz is its signature. The signature records that it was made in one of the most renowned knotting workshops in Tabriz. Written in Arabic script, it expresses the individuality and the noble origin of this rug.

The background of this Tabriz is cream white. Beige and cream white also dominate the overall impression. The border is worked in beige, cream white and dusky pink. In the beige centre, cream white and dusky pink are combined.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool, also called kurk wool, is a particularly fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of especially high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls. The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, and therefore particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
