Tabriz

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in dark red. At around 640,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 398 × 300 cm make it a rug for spacious living areas. It shows to equally good effect beneath a large dining table. Colouring and texture give any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for years.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tabriz. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1988. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but only partly restored condition. The edges are damaged in parts. The rug has a few smaller stains. We have not fully restored this Tabriz, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course be happy to restore it further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to a near-perfect condition.
