Origin

The city of Tabriz (also written Täbris or Täbriz) on the northern border of Persia has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups, thanks to its position at the crossroads of numerous caravan routes. Although the city lies in eastern Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to the Turkish language. The bazaars of Tabriz have long traded in craftwork, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Pattern

The lavish floral motifs of this Tabriz are elegant and full of variety. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.

The edge of the rug is graced by a surround (border). The border forms a wonderful contrast to the centre.

The repeating elements of this Tabriz rug have no specific centre. The recurring repeat pattern feels calming without ever becoming dull. Rugs with a repeat pattern are also described as all-over patterned.

The background of this Tabriz is beige-yellow. The border is worked in beige-yellow and beige-yellow.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from cork wool and silk. Cork wool, also written kurk wool, is a particularly fine knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of exceptionally high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, reeled by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and let the colours glow in different nuances, depending on how the light falls. The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation.
