Tabriz

This rug in rust red and dark blue combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 20,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine execution of the details. At 59 × 46 cm it works well as a small accent rug. It also cuts a fine figure in an entryway or a bathroom. This one-of-a-kind piece brings individual character to a room and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Tabriz has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1880. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. The edges are damaged in places. The fringes could do with a repair. We did not fully restore this Tabriz because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If that is what you would prefer, we will gladly carry the restoration further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
