Origin

Every one of our rug cushions is a one-of-a-kind piece. Some of our cushions do have a brother or a sister, though, because we made several cushions out of one rug.

The front of the cushion covers is made from fragments of hand-knotted Turkish vintage rugs from the 50s to the 70s.

The rugs were hand-knotted from pure new wool. The new wool was dyed with plant colours before the knotting began. Their luminous, natural shades are loved all over the world.

We choose the rugs carefully and clean them before they are made into cushions – and, where needed, restore them gently.

The back is 100 % cotton and comes with a zip. The fabric and the colour of the back can vary, however. The colour of the back may differ from the photo and is only an example.

The insert is not included. Our rug cushions are pack animals, so there is no way we can send one out on its own ;) You have to take in at least two.

Material

The technique used to prepare the materials for the pile of this rug cushion is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for instance, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff for every kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is just as time- and labour-intensive. And fewer and fewer people still master the craft of spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.
